Studies of thesis projects from year 5. Course Director: Dr Jonathan Charley

1 Technology Object

You are asked to make a three-dimensional object that captures the technological aspirations of your thesis. You are free to choose any medium or combination of materials. For example you could fashion something original from raw materials, you might recycle objects in an innovative manner, or reassemble an existing piece off technology into something new, or indeed any other permutation in between or beyond.

To be invisibly hung from the ceiling in an A3 frame

2 History Hand Drawing

Using any combination of non-digital media e.g. pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, or paint, you are asked to produce an annotated monotone image of your project that is executed as if it is an important historical document e.g. a working drawing for a builder, a measured drawing by an architectural historian, or an artist’s impression. In short, the sort of image you might find in an archive or a book on architectural or construction history

A3 Portrait

3 Culture Cabinet of Curiosities

Using the techniques of photo-montage you are required to take a photograph of a piece of furniture from any historical period but one that has an abundance of draws and shelves. Into the gaps and spaces you are asked to place cropped images of artifacts that represent the cultural context and ideas that have inspired your project. You might reference a film, a book, a painting, a piece of music, or in fact anything that broadly sits under the umbrella called ‘culture’

A3 Portrait

4 Politics Manifesto

Using text only you are required to write a five-point manifesto that summarises the political, economic and social objectives of your thesis. You need not feel constrained here by the character of existing reality. It is an opportunity for you to articulate a set of ideals.

On the 26th of March 2013, the Strathclyde School of Architecture Student Society A@131, in collaboration with the New Glasgow Society hosted a celebration of its B Listed, purpose built School of Architecture Building.

The evening saw approximately 110 people fill the lecture theatre to be inspired and entertained by the three speakers of the evening. They were Charles Anderson who took everyone on a journey tracing his life and works, one of which is the wonderful sculpture in the foyer of the Strathclyde Architecture School.

Professor Frank Arneil Walker, told the audience of his involvement as associate of Fielden + Associates, and in particular the arrangement of the outline design of the Architecture building, and his involvement in the University of Glasgow Refectory Building. He was followed by John Campbell Cunningham, the project architect of the Strathclyde Architecture Building Project. John gave an entertaining rendition of his experiences on the project, including how the navvies slept on straw on the building site (which helped the concrete cure during the cold winter), and how a major theft of whisky turned up on the building site.

The audience participated in a question and answer session, which acclaimed our building as being not just innovative in 1967, but also as being extremely relevant today when we consider different ways of teaching architecture.

The evening concluded with the awarding of Honorary memberships of the A@131 society to:

Professor Frank Walker

John Campbell Cunningham

Charles Anderson

and a posthumous award to

Professor Frank Fielden

………………….

RESULTS OF THE POLL (conducted on the evening)

Question: ”Where should Strathclyde Architecture School be housed?”

Audience number: Approx 110

Response number: 75

Preference - Architecture Building: 73

Preference - James Weir Building: 2

97% prefer the Architecture Building to the James Weir Building to host the Strathclyde School of Architecture. This is the only poll to be done to date.

The full video excerpts of the event will be made available soon. If you would like any more information please contact arch-webspace@strath.ac.uk

Professor Frank Fielden

Last night, we gathered to celebrate the excellent building that has housed this school of Architecture since 1967. Discussion also centred on Professor Frank Fielden, who set the foundations of our school of Architecture both literally and metaphorically.

The student society awarded Frank Fielden a posthumous award for his services to the architecture school.

20th Century Society Building of the Month (article link here)

20th Century Society Building of the Month (article link here):
Our custom-designed home, by Fielden + Associates, was featured as the 20th Century Society’s ‘Building of the Month’ for September 2012 last year - the same month that Historic Scotland listed the building “grade B”.

The University of Strathclyde Department of Architecture Student Society is hosing an event, in collaboration with the New Glasgow Society, to celebrate its purpose built Architecture building and to promote and showcase the works of artist, Charles Anderson. The event will also be a snapshot of Art and Architecture in Scotland at the time, hosted in a fine building, emblematic of the best architecture of that period and featuring one of Charles Anderson’s artworks, the Strathclyde Architecture School Building is a fitting host for this evening.

Part one

of the evening will feature Charles Anderson delivering a talk about his work and techniques. He has been one of Scotland’s most successful mural designers and sculptors. He studied Drawing & Painting at Glasgow School of Art graduating in 1959. He worked as a professional mural painter and sculptor on major art and design projects throughout the UK, carrying out commissions for local authorities, property developers and banks among others. One of his works is the in-situ concrete wall sculpture at the Strathclyde School of Architecture Building. Charles, having now returned to painting, will speak about his work and the techniques used to create it.

As well as featuring a presentation by Charles Anderson, the Project Architects on the Architecture Building, John Cunningham and Professor Frank Walker, will reminisce about the construction project at 131 Rottenrow as Part Two of the evening.

Frank A Walker studied at the Glasgow School of Architecture (1955 -60). In 1961 he joined the practice of Professor Frank Fielden, Head of the Department of Architecture & Building Science at the University of Strathclyde, shortly to be appointed architect for the University’s new School of Architecture Building. John Cunningham studied architecture at The Glasgow School Of Art (1956-63) whilst serving and completing his apprenticeship. He joined Fielden & Associates in 1965 to take charge of The School of Architecture (E2 /6) project.

Frank and John took over the practice when Professor Fielden was appointed Secretary to the Royal Fine Arts Commission, with John continuing the practice when Frank left to pursue an academic career. He became a Professor in the Department of Architecture in 1992.

This purpose Built School of Architecture building is considered by many to be the best post-war building on the John Anderson Campus, and an exemplar building for the delivery of Architectural Education. Completed in 1967, it was the first purpose built building in the UK for over three decades. It was B-Grade Listed by Historic Scotland in September 2012, the same month that the building featured as the 20th Century Society’s ‘Building of the Month’.

The New Glasgow Society (NGS) is a civic society promoting, protecting and raising interest in the City of Glasgow, through campaigning, discussion, projects, talks and exhibitions. The Department of Architecture’s Official Student Society, Architecture @ 131 Rottenrow, was incorporated this year and has been running a series of Guest Lectures and events and promoting the Department’s ethos, aims and objectives as a whole. Events, including “Constructing an Architecture School” have kindly been directly funded by the Faculty of Engineering at the University through its LEARn workshop.
